Fall protection toolbox talk
Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, per OSHA. On any walking or working surface with an unprotected side or edge 6 feet or more above a lower level, OSHA 1926.501(b)(1) requires guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest — pick one and use it every time, ten-minute tasks included.
Why run this talk first?
OSHA’s fall prevention campaign opens with one sentence: falls are the leading cause of death in construction. The deaths cluster around short tasks — a quick trip up to check flashing, ten minutes on a low roof edge — because “I’ll only be up there a minute” is exactly when nobody rigs protection. The 6-foot trigger in 1926.501(b)(1) doesn’t have a time exemption.
Talking points
- The trigger height is 6 feet (1.8 m) to a lower level — 1926.501(b)(1). Above that, you need guardrails, a safety net system, or a personal fall arrest system. No fourth option.
- Walk the edge before work starts. Identify every unprotected side, floor hole, skylight, and leading edge in today’s work area, and say out loud which control covers each one.
- Harness on means harness inspected: webbing cuts and burns, D-ring deformation, stitching, and the lanyard’s snap hooks. A harness that arrested a fall is done — retire it.
- Anchor points carry the whole system. Tying off to guardrail, conduit, or “whatever was up there” is how arrest systems fail. If you can’t name the rated anchor, stop and ask.
- Ladders, scaffolds, and steel erection have their own fall rules — this talk covers the general 1926 Subpart M duty. If today’s work is on scaffold, run that talk instead.
