Fire prevention and hot work toolbox talk

Most construction fires start where welding, cutting, or grinding meets combustible material that nobody moved. OSHA 1926.352 requires fire extinguishing equipment to be immediately available wherever hot work happens, and 1926.150(c)(1)(i) sets the baseline for site coverage: a fire extinguisher within 100 feet of travel distance, at least one per 3,000 square feet of protected building area.

Before the first spark

  1. Move the fuel or shield it. Combustibles get relocated away from the hot work; what can’t move gets covered with fire-resistant material (1926.352 requires moving the fire hazard or the work, or guarding what stays).
  2. Check where sparks actually go: down floor openings, behind walls, into cracks and pipe penetrations. Slag finds the gap you didn’t look at.
  3. Put the extinguisher at the work — 1926.352(d) says immediately available, maintained ready for instant use. “Back at the gang box” is not immediately available.
  4. Assign a fire guard when normal precautions aren’t enough: 1926.352(e) requires additional personnel to watch for fire during the hot work and for a sufficient period afterward to be sure nothing is smoldering.
  5. If the site uses hot work permits, the permit is the checklist — no permit, no torch.

Extinguisher coverage around the whole site

The general coverage rule in 1926.150(c)(1)(i) is worth every crew knowing: an extinguisher rated at least 2A for each 3,000 square feet of protected building area, with travel distance to reach one at 100 feet or less. If you can’t picture where your nearest extinguisher is right now, that’s the finding. Fuel storage, temporary heaters, and charging stations each deserve their own glance — heaters need clearance from anything that burns, and fuel transfers happen outside with the right containers.

The fires that make the news usually started at quitting time. Sparks that landed in insulation or blocking smolder quietly for an hour — that’s why the fire guard stays after the torch stops, and why the last walk-through of a hot-work area is a look and a smell, not a wave.
