Electrical safety toolbox talk
Temporary power is what makes construction electrical work dangerous: cords dragged through mud and traffic, receptacles wired last week, and circuits nobody has mapped. OSHA 1926.404(b)(1) requires ground-fault circuit interrupters or an assured equipment grounding conductor program on construction sites, and 1926.416 prohibits work near any part of an electric power circuit unless it’s deenergized and grounded or effectively guarded.
Why is jobsite power different from house power?
Because everything is temporary and everything gets abused. The cord powering your saw has been run over, rained on, and yanked out by the cable a hundred times. GFCI protection exists for exactly this environment — it trips in a fraction of a second when current leaks through a damaged cord, a wet connection, or you.

- GFCI on every cord set: 1926.404(b)(1) requires GFCIs (or an assured equipment grounding conductor program) for receptacle outlets on construction sites. If your circuit isn’t GFCI-protected, add an inline GFCI — don’t gamble.
- Inspect cords daily at the plug, the strain relief, and along the jacket. Cut, spliced-with-tape, or ground-pin-missing cords get cut in half and binned so nobody “rescues” them.
- Keep cords out of water and out of traffic — hang them, cover them, or reroute them. A cord under a steel plate in a puddle is a trap with a delay.
- Look up before you raise anything. Ladders, scaffold sections, dump beds, and crane booms near overhead lines kill people every year — locate lines during planning, keep required clearances, and treat every line as energized.
- Only qualified persons work on electrical equipment. Everyone else’s job is recognizing and reporting: warm receptacles, tripping breakers, tingles from a tool. A tool that tingles gets tagged out immediately.
The tingle rule
A “little shock” from a tool or cord is a ground path failing. It’s not a quirk — the same fault in wet boots is a fatality. Tag it out and report it, every time.

- Is every circuit the crew plugs into today GFCI-protected — and who checked?
- Where do cords cross traffic or sit in water on this site right now?
- Are there overhead lines anywhere near today’s lifts, ladders, or deliveries? Who verified clearance?
- Has anyone felt a tingle from a tool here and kept using it? What should happen instead?
